Tech NO!

It's 2018 and wow, everything is "smart." Smart phone, smart TV, smart watch, smart house, yeah, everything. Technology is great and benefits us in so many ways. But, can you have too much technology? Can you get through a dinner without checking your smart phone? Are you one of the millions of people using voice assistant devices? I recently watched a presentation for one of these home voice assistant devices and they do have some practical uses. I did begin to wonder though, could they become too invasive? One device allowed you to call or "drop in" on family or friends with similar devices in their homes, So basically the feature acted as a video phone you activate with a voice command and then you can see and hear the other person, So if I was following the presentation correctly, once you accept the initial "drop in" they can drop in whenever they want to. When,Ev.Er. I don't know if I want people video dropping in on me like that. What if you are in the middle of doing something you don't want them to see you doing? You know like drinking out of the milk jug, having sex, or furiously swinging at a fly as you curse it out in Spanish. What if you are having a discussion about something sensitive or just talking trash about someone, possibly them? You could be avoiding someone and boom, they drop in, not cool. Even if you are not in view of the devices' camera, you can still be heard. How do you handle being in the middle of having sex and your mother-in-law "drops in" and now she knows that her son likes to be called Jumbo Daddy? Yeah, just bad.

There have also been reports of the devices activating on their own and laughing. This would scare the crap out of me. The laughter could possibly leave some people (like me) with hurt feeling, Say you put together an outfit you think is super cute, you're posing in the mirror and your Alexa enabled device lets out one of these random laughs. Um, rude! Was it really random or is this Alexa chick bullying you? We know the devices can hear because it accesses the microphone, but can it tell what we're doing? Does it watch us even when we are not engaging with it? Creepy. Can you picture yourself in a romantic scenario and Alexa starts calling out instructions? "Please raise her legs up", "may I suggest hitting it from the back?" (Does this qualify as a threesome?) On a brighter note, maybe Alexa will see that you are running low on condoms and can auto order some for you? Sex life lacking in your relationship? Ask Alexa to remind you on Wednesday evenings that it is sexy time. So I think it boils down to how much privacy do you need and how much sharing are you comfortable with.

What are your tech rules at home, in the bedroom? Have you ever had a tech mishap or been laughed at by your voice assistant? For now, I am going to sit out the the voice assistant movement. If your partner calls out Alexa's name, or if that new guy you are dating has an Alexa tattoo on his chest, remember, I warned you.

  1. That is freaky. I think Alexa is banned from my bedroom. So my son has a tape on his laptop's camera because he does not want anyone hacking the cam and watching him. SOO I wonder will ear muffs over the Alexa speaker work to keep her from listening?

  2. This just makes me want to get Alexa. Just kidding. I think it's way too creepy and over the top. I was worried Quinnie's new speaker which is awesome has Alexa. I had to warn her not to use it. But I wonder if she will listen. Quinnie, not Alexa. And now I am worried that Alexa will listen and Quinnie won't!! Awesome work as always Buddie!!
